January 2–13 Episodes #1021–1030 of Mister Rogers' Neighborhood aired on PBS for the last time. Episodes #1066 onwards aired the next week.

Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind premiered exclusively in Japanese theaters.

Microsoft released DOS 2.11.
March 30 The Wizard of Oz reran on CBS.
April 2–6 Five new episodes of Mister Rogers' Neighborhood, titled "Mister Rogers Talks About Work" (episodes #1526–1530), premiered on PBS.

My Little Pony premiered on local syndication. At the time, it was clearly not a series.

May 7–11 Five more new episodes of Mister Rogers' Neighborhood, titled "Mister Rogers Talks About Grandparents" (episodes #1531–1535), premiered on PBS. These episodes were the last to have the 1971 PBS logo.

By the end of this year, a total of at least 195 out of 400 remaining episodes of the old series of Mister Rogers' Neighborhood reran on PBS, having previously aired from October 19, 1981 to November 5, 1982, while those that previously aired in 1983 did not air again until April 1985 at the earliest.
