A Friend in Deed is the 18th Season 2 episode of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. This episode marks the first time Pinkie Pie is the only member of the Mane Six present for almost the whole episode.


Pinkie Pie is flummoxed about what to do when she meets Cranky Doodle Donkey, the first creature to ever refuse her offer of friendship.


On November 15, 2010, Lauren Faust wrote premises for this episode, Hearts and Hooves Day (originally titled "Valentine's Day") and Putting Your Hoof Down (titled "When Push Comes to Shove" at the time). For a short time, it was listed as #217 in the episode list, before it was confirmed to be #218 as of November 24.

Amy Keating Rogers wrote the full outline from November 16 through December 14, 2010, then revised it on January 18, 2011.

The first full script was written from January 20 through February 14, 2011, with revisions made to the script from February 16–24 and again on March 21. Voice recording began on March 24.

The Smile Song was first composed and performed on March 25, 2011. A remixed version followed on May 10, followed by the first performances of a few more new songs on July 5. All songs were finalized on October 14, 2011.

The completed animatic for this episode was submitted for review on June 28, 2011.

A rough cut of the animated episode was submitted for review on November 2, 2011.

Production was officially complete on December 19, 2011.
