Events in 1980

February 4–8 Five new episodes of Mister Rogers' Neighborhood titled "Mister Rogers Talks About Superheroes" premiered on PBS. These were episodes #1466–1470. Reruns of the old series continued on February 11.
February 18–29 Episodes #1061–1065 and #1051–1055 of Mister Rogers' Neighborhood reran again before continuing on to the next season. This marked the last reruns of the latter episodes.
March 7 Lady and the Tramp 1980 Poster

Lady and the Tramp was re-released in theaters, while The Aristocats was pushed back to a later date this year. This film grossed $26,114,207 in 1980.

May 2 Pontoffelpock title

Pontoffel Pock and His Magic Piano premiered on ABC.

May 19–23 Five more new episodes of Mister Rogers' Neighborhood, titled "Mister Rogers Makes an Opera", premiered on PBS. These were episodes #1471–1475.

Mary Poppins 1973 Poster

On the final day of this week, Mary Poppins was re-released in theaters for a second time, earlier than expected. This release grossed about $14 million.

August 18–22 While no new episodes of Mister Rogers' Neighborhood aired this summer, "Starting School" (episodes #1461–1465) reran on PBS for the first time.

The Cat in the Hat aired on CBS for the last time.

October 25 The Wizard of Oz 1980 VHS

The Wizard of Oz was released on VHS from MGM/CBS Home Video, as one of the first films to do so. This tape included previews for Fame (1980) and 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968).

October 27 Grinchnight title

Grinch Night aired on ABC for the last time.

October 27–31 "Mister Rogers Talks About Superheroes" reran on PBS for the first time.

How the Grinch Stole Christmas! reran on CBS this year.

December 19 Aristocats1

The Aristocats was re-issued in theaters. It grossed about $18 million in the box office and continued playing in theaters until 1981.

December 30 Mary Poppins 1980 VHS

Mary Poppins was released on VHS from Walt Disney Home Video.

By the end of this year, a total of 242 out of 445 remaining episodes of the old series of Mister Rogers' Neighborhood reran on PBS, while all other episodes did not air until 1981 (or early 1982, in the case of mid-season episodes from 1970).
