Synopsis

"Get your muzzle out of those books and make some friends!" That's what Princess Celestia tells Twilight Sparkle. She may be the smartest unicorn in Equestria, but Twilight Sparkle gets an "incomplete" in friendship. There's more to life than learning magic, after all -- so she goes to Ponyville on a mission to make friends. There she meets five special ponies who take her on exciting adventures and teach her the most powerful magic of all ... the magic of friendship!

Overview

In each episode, the Mane Six ponies (or in other cases, other characters) go on adventures in Equestria and learn lessons in friendship. Each season starts off with a two-part story (comprising of two episodes), with most focusing on Twilight Sparkle. Originally in Season 1, Twilight writes all the letters to Princess Celestia about friendship. In Seasons 2-3, her pony friends (and Spike) write the letters to her. From the Season 3 finale onwards, Twilight graduates from being a student of Princess Celestia and becomes an Alicorn princess, then by the end of the show's first era (2010-2014) in the Season 4 finale, acquires her own castle, the Castle of Friendship.

The second generation of this show, which starts off with Season 5, introduces Starlight Glimmer, who learns lessons in friendship of her own throughout Season 6, then begins having adventures with her new friends in Season 7. To educate various ponies and creatures in Equestria, the School of Friendship is introduced for Season 8. Finally, Twilight and her friends defeat evil for good in Season 9, and many years later, Twilight becomes the new ruler of Equestria.

December 17, 2008	Lauren Faust wrote the first full script for an early version of "The Ticket Master".
May 19, 2009	The Mane Six was originally going to be the Mane Nine -- Twilight Twinkle, Applejack, Cherilee, Fluttershy, Pinkie Pie, Rainbow Dash, Rarity, Scootaloo, and Sweetie Belle.
May 27, 2009	Lauren Faust, the first of only two available writers for the show back then, wrote the script for unreleased Animation Test titled "My Little Pony Adventures" (codenamed "MLPTST"). This Animation Test was to feature Twilight Twinkle, Rainbow Dash, and Pinkie Pie.
June 9, 2009	The full animatic for the Animation Test was completed. Tara Strong performed all the voice talents for all three characters.
July 9, 2009	The rough cut for the Animation Test was completed. Twilight's final design was first used here.
July 10, 2009	The Animation Test finished production. However, it wasn't unveiled online until the show ended 10 years later.
August 5, 2009	Lauren Faust wrote a second draft for The Ticket Master.
September 10, 2009	A "My Little Pony Adventures" show bible existed. This bible included premises for what were initially to be the first nine episodes of the show: The Ticket Master, Griffon the Brush Off, The Cutie Mark Chronicles, Applebonk Season, Bring on the Thunder, Dragonshy, A Dawg and Pony Show, Fancy Meeting You Deer, and Nothing More to Sea.
October 21, 2009	Season 1 officially began pre-production with the first outline for one of the nine episodes listed above, along with the script for a new pilot episode.
February 18, 2010	The My Little Pony theme song was first composed and performed, not long before the very first full animatic.
July 9, 2010	Season 2 started development, in which what were supposed to be the last two Season 1 episodes ("Seeds of Chaos") moved to this season.
March 29, 2011	Season 1 officially wrapped up production.
April 25, 2011	Season 3 started development.
March 23, 2012	Season 2 officially wrapped up production.
April 10, 2012	Season 4 started development.
January 10, 2013	Season 3 officially wrapped up production.
October 8, 2013	Season 5 started development.
April 4, 2014	Season 4 officially wrapped up production.
October 10, 2014	Season 6 started development, as so did a motion picture film.
November 9, 2015	Season 5 officially wrapped up production.
December 2, 2015	Season 7 started development, in which initially, it was going to be a reboot, but that concept was rejected.
May 13, 2016	A recolored version of the My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic logo was first revealed. This logo went into permanent effect starting with Season 7.
August 8, 2016	Season 8 started development.
August 22, 2016	Season 6 officially wrapped up production.
August 8, 2017	Season 9, the final season, started development.
August 29, 2017	Season 7 officially wrapped up production.
March 21, 2018	The last new writer for the show, Ariel Shepherd-Oppenheim, wrote the premise for "A Horse Shoe-in".
April 12, 2018	The final episode order was finalized, with the announcement of The Last Problem.
May 31, 2018	Season 8 officially wrapped up production.
September 2018	The last voice recordings were done.
February 16, 2019	Season 9 was confirmed to be the final season, resulting in a total of 221 episodes for the entire series (222 if you count "Best Gift Ever").
June 21, 2019	The show officially wrapped up production, with the final episodes of Season 9.

Broadcast history

All My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic installments were originally broadcast on the Hub Network since its launch on October 10, 2010. Episodes were released simultaneously on iTunes since February 15, 2011. It was also available on Netflix since April 1, 2012.
The Hub Network was replaced by Discovery Family on October 13, 2014, shortly after The CW discontinued its Saturday morning cartoon block, Vortexx. Since then, most shows including My Little Pony were moved from the Hub Network to Discovery Family, and the show's second era that began with Season 5 has always originally aired on this network.
The final marathon of episodes aired on Discovery Family from December 23–30, 2019. The last episode to air was "The Last Problem" at 4:30 p.m. on December 30.
At least three months after the show ended, Seasons 1, 6 and 7 were withdrawn from Discovery Family's rerun schedule, and Season 5 was only seen occasionally within summer 2020, before returning on a regular basis. Season 1 was also brought back on April 16, 2021.
