Although The Fox and the Hound was re-released in theaters on March 25, 1988, it wasn't released on VHS until six years later, on March 4, 1994. The first copies of this VHS were produced in December 1993.
After all the 1991 prints of Dumbo, Alice in Wonderland, The Sword in the Stone and Robin Hood were discontinued along with Pinocchio and Aladdin, The Fox and the Hound was the only Walt Disney Classics title left in stock until April 30, 1995, as the brand was replaced by the Walt Disney Masterpiece Collection for 1994.

From 1995 to 1996, The Fox and the Hound was re-released in theaters in select countries, mainly in Europe and Australia.
After The Fox and the Hound went back into the Disney Vault in 1995, it premiered on the Disney Channel on November 15, 1995 and stayed there through February 3, 1996.
